About Dry Eyes and Eye Allergies

Dry eyes can be uncomfortable, and there are a variety of reasons that can cause it. Dry eyes happen when your eyes don't make enough tears to stay wet, or when your tears don't work correctly. This can lead to inflammation and potential damage to the surface of the eye.

Other symptoms of dry eyes may include:

  • Burning or redness
  • Mucus in or around the eye
  • Sensitivity to light
  • The feeling of something in your eye
Many people find comfort in non-prescription eye drops, but occasionally, a more direct treatment may be required.

Eye allergies are a common issue among people of all ages. Known allergens such as pet dander, pollen or spore are the most common culprit.

They trigger the body to respond to the allergen by releasing chemicals called histamines in the body that can cause symptoms such as:
  • Redness
  • Itchiness
  • Watery eyes
  • Burning
  • The feeling of something in your eye
Most people try to avoid contact with the allergen known to make them react, however this can be difficult since there are so many potential triggers. Sometimes, a non-prescription eye drop can help to sooth the symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a research study?

A research study (also called a clinical trial) is a medical study that helps to answer important questions about an investigational drug or device – these may include how well an investigational study drug, or device, works for a certain condition. All medications and devices must be tested in clinical research studies before they can be approved and prescribed to patients.

A research study is the process by which new and innovative medications, treatments and devices are approved and brought to market, so people can live happier and healthier lives. Even over-the-counter medications, such as NSAIDs, you may have used to counteract a headache, have gone through the clinical research study process before it was available at your local pharmacy.

The Dry Eyes and Eye Allergies Studies are multi-center studies researching the effectiveness of an investigational treatment for adults who experience symptoms of dry eyes or eye allergies .

There is no cost to participate in the Dry Eyes and Eye Allergies Studies. If you decide to take part:

  • You will receive study-related care throughout the study from a team of experienced doctors and nurses.
  • You will receive all study-related care at no cost.
  • You may be paid for each study visit you complete.

The study team will be able to explain more about what the Dry Eyes and Eye Allergies Studies will involve, and it is up to you to decide if you want to take part. Participation in this study is voluntary. Whether or not you decide to participate in this study will not affect your current or future relationships with your doctors. If you decide to participate, you are free to withdraw at any time without affecting those relationships.

We match you to a research center within a close travel distance from your home. If we are not running the study in your area currently, with your permission, we will keep you in our database and reach out once a research center in your area becomes available. If, at any time, you decided you no longer want your information stored, you can opt out and we will delete your details.
